The University of Engineering and Technology (main) is situated in northern Lahore, close to the historic Grand Trunk Road and the Shalimar Gardens from the Mughal Empire era. Originally known as the Mughalpura Technical College in 1921, it was later named Maclagan Engineering College in 1923 after Sir Edwards Maclagan, the then Governor of Punjab. Offering courses in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering initially, it expanded its offerings over the years to include various engineering disciplines, architecture, and planning.

History

Established in 1921 as the Mughalpura Technical College, the institution evolved into Maclagan Engineering College by 1923 under the patronage of Governor Sir Edwards Maclagan. Affiliated with the University of the Punjab in 1932, it offered Bachelor’s Degree courses in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering by 1947. Subsequent years saw significant growth, with the introduction of programs like Mining Engineering in 1954 and expansion into various engineering disciplines and postgraduate studies by the 1960s and 1970s. Renamed the University of Engineering & Technology in 1972, it established an Engineering College in Taxila in 1975, which later became an independent university in 1998. In response to the country’s power crisis, the university established its own Power Generation Unit in 2004, showcasing its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
