About the University of Gujrat
Gujrat, though a modern town, sits upon the ancient grounds of Udanagri, originally founded by Raja Bachan Pal, a Surajbansi Rajput. Its historical significance is evident from its transformation over the ages.
History
The town’s roots date back to the legendary Raja Bachan Pal, with Udanagri being its ancient name. Ali Khan, a Gujar, is credited with reconstructing the present walled city atop the ruins of Udanagri. There are references linking the city’s restoration to figures like Rani Gujran, wife of Badr Sen, and Mughal Emperor Akbar, who elevated Gujrat into a bustling market and military center.
Under British rule, Gujrat became the district headquarters, and its educational legacy blossomed with the establishment of institutions like Zamindar College, attracting students from various regions. This educational prowess earned Gujrat the epithet “Khita-e-Yunan (part of Greece) of Punjab.”
In 2003, the University of Gujrat (UOG) was established under the leadership of Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, marking another milestone in Gujrat’s historical journey.
